Description

D.Gray man Universe (c) Katsura Hoshino
Liesel (c) me

Name: Liesel Hermann (pronounced LEEZ-uhl)
Age: 19 (20 when she meets Hugo)
Gender: Female
Birthday: June 8th
Height: 5'1"
Weight: 107 lbs
Nationality: German
Blood Type: AB

STATS (out of 5)
Education: 2 (Barely any formal education)
Affinity: 3
Mental: 3
Battle Ability: 4
Flexibility: 5
Acrobatics: 4

Affiliation: Black Order, European Branch
Innocence: 75%

Appearance: Liesel is a fairly small girl, and her lighter stature helps her to whip in and out of places quickly by using her Innocence. She has straw colored blonde hair, which she generally ties back to keep out of the way during missions, though tufts of it still manage to drape across her shoulders. She has her father’s dark brown eyes.

Uniform details: Her uniform sports super long sleeves, upon her request, so that her Innocence remains somewhat hidden from enemies before battle begins. Both her shoulders are padded slightly more than the standard uniform, just in case she has to make a crash landing (where she falls from the sky, directs shock of impact to her shoulders rather than legs, and rolls to minimize damage). The skirt design was made upon her father’s preference because he wanted her to look lady-like, even if it ended up being much shorter than the acceptable dress length for a 19th century woman. Liesel makes sure to wear shorts underneath her skirt so she doesn’t flash anyone, but lately she seems to be slipping requests for a shorter pair, possibly because she saw Lenalee shortening her own. The coat tails from the back hang just below her knees, and the same goes for the tails on her front. There are four separate tails, not two that go around her sides.

Scars/markings: Her right hand carries several scars from training and field accidents where she didn’t pull away from explosions fast enough. Her left hand is calloused from gripping the cross on her bracelet so often.

Personality: Liesel is somewhat shy around her peers because she had little interaction with her own age group during childhood. She enjoyed interacting with her father’s medical patients, though, and because the majority were senior citizens, she’s quicker to begin conversation with older people. She is most comfortable when she knows she is able to use her Innocence to the best of her ability, and this can give her a big confidence boost. Most of the time Liesel is shy, but since joining the Order became determined to make more friends and be more outgoing.

History:
Liesel was born to a middle-class family, her mother being an English teacher and her father being a doctor. Upon Liesel’s third birthday, her parents Kurt and Irma decided to go into town and look for their daughter's present. Young Liesel accompanied them, and it wasn't long before her chubby little hands were grasping for a pair of bracelets in one of the display windows. Despite Irma's original protests about a young child having jewelry with so many small parts, with Kurt's persuading (much of which involved dangling a discontented baby Liesel in her mother's line of sight), Liesel’s parents eventually bought the bracelets. Irma's only condition was that the bracelets must be taken off at night when they couldn't supervise her.
Three years passed without incident, but around Liesel's sixth birthday, strange things started happening around the family. It began with the loss of one of the village's residents--a young boy who succumbed to a case of chicken pox while under Kurt's care. His parents, greatly bereaved, disappeared into solitude for a time. Every day Kurt took care to drop a basket of food outside the family's door, and the empty basket that greeted him the next day suggested they accepted his offers. This practice continued until one day the young boy's mother finally met him at the door. It was the first time she had shown herself after several days of grief, but her husband remained locked in the house, uninterested in contacting the outside. Slowly the mother eased herself back into their community, but her husband remained locked away. He failed to attend his son's funeral, and even the town's pity for the family could not spare the boy's father from the town gossips. Not long after the boy's funeral, the Hermann's house was ransacked. Though there were whispers in the streets that a cloaked man had been seen leaving the house and Kurt suspected the boy's father, nothing could be confirmed.
Eventually the drama seemed to subside, until a small string of people began to go missing. The first was the boy's mother. When the police went to question her husband, they found an empty house, which brought the total up to missing persons (and potentially a missing murderer). A small splattering of people seemed to fade out of existence along with them, and soon patients stopped visiting Liesel's father for fear of travel.
The disappearances continued, leaving Kurt and Irma concerned for their family's well being. Unaware that these incidents were due to a Level 2 akuma who had become aware of Liesel’s Innocence, the two decided to move to a new area. Just before they were finished preparing the move, the akuma struck the family, crashing through the house in an attempt to destroy the young accommodator. At this time Liesel's Innocence dropped off its first explosive, no longer remaining dormant, and started a fire within the child's room. Liesel’s mother, Irma, was killed in the turmoil of the akuma's attack, but her father managed to take Liesel into the forest without the akuma noticing.
After seeing the fearsome creature, Kurt and his daughter kept moving constantly. They wouldn’t stay in one town for more than 5 months, and therefore Liesel hardly had any time to make friends or attend school. Her father tried teaching her to read; however, since he was a doctor with few children’s books, she was mainly taught from complicated medical journals and notes… which didn’t go over very well. Eventually her father scrapped the medical journal approach and started drawing words in the sand before asking Liesel to read them back. The results were better, but she got lost among the frustrations of the moves and found it difficult to focus on something that seemed so trivial as reading. Instead she planned out miniature adventures for herself and proved herself to be quite the climber. In her mind, the closer she was to the sky, the closer she was to Heaven and her mother. It became her habit to search and climb the tallest thing she could in whatever new place her father moved her to. Since his attention was normally focused elsewhere (like finding jobs or short term patients to treat/figuring out what the current town dynamics were/agonizing over the monsters he was hiding from 'was it even real?'/enrolling an unwilling daughter in school again.... and again...), it was easy for Liesel to break away.

Liesel herself saw only one other akuma before coming to the Order, and this encounter was the first and only time her right bracelet was activated in its raw form to her knowledge (during the house fire, she hadn't realized the explosion started because a charm fell from the bracelet). She was exploring a nearby mountain when it happened upon her. Several small charms fell off her bracelet just before the akuma was about to shoot her, and the subsequent explosion killed the level 1 akuma immediately. The force of the aftershock knocked Liesel off the plateau she had been on, and the only thing to save her was another, smaller ledge located beneath. She sprained her wrist in the fall and still has some of the burn scars, but she remained otherwise unharmed. Liesel has never told her father about the akuma incident.
Shortly after her wrist healed and Liesel was back to exploring, a Finder saw her swinging from the trees. Instead of running or shunning her for her oddness, he was calm and explained that her bracelet most likely contained a shard of Innocence. He asked her to accompany him back to the Order, for both her sake and the sake of the Holy War, explaining about akuma and their threat. With a lot of persuasion, she agreed to come as long as her father could as well. Kurt was offered a job in the Medical Section and currently helps treat members of the Order. When Liesel was brought to Hevlaska, the woman revealed that her right bracelet held the actual innocence shard. In its raw state, it seemed to utilize part of the bracelet to turn it into a crude explosive  The left bracelet's modifications weren't revealed until later, when the scientists noticed Liesel's person attachment to the pair of bracelets rather than just the single one.

Innocence: Its name is “Draht Flügel,” which translates to “Wire Wings” in English. The innocence shard is divided into two bracelets, one specializing in attack and the other in maneuverability.

Left hand: The left hand’s bracelet has a cross on the underside which extends and grows larger when activated. A wire shoots out from the top of the cross, and Liesel is able to direct both its speed and direction. It can latch onto most anything, even smooth surfaces, and it doesn’t detach until Liesel commands it to.
-Liesel can latch onto akuma with her ability, the wire digging into the outer layer of the metal covering its body. This works best with level ones because they can’t rip her off, but it causes minimal damage. It is mostly used for quickly getting close to the akuma or causing a diversion.
Right hand: The bracelet on Liesel’s right hand has two bands that are welded together. There are approximately 25 charm bombs per discharge, and it takes each charm 5 minutes to replace itself after usage; however, the recharge timespan is likely to change based off Liesel’s synchro rate—higher synch rate means less time. The limited amount of ammo causes Liesel to use each one carefully.
Top band: Used for timed detonations. Liesel is able to drop or attach these bombs to akuma and get a safe distance away (or wait for comrades to do the same) before initiating an explosion.
Lower band: Used for almost immediate detonation. These are circular charms that dangle off the bracelet. When Liesel chooses to, she can throw these at an enemy. The explosion is more powerful than the first pair, but it is riskier to use these—for both Liesel and her teammates.
Facts about Liesel:
• Liesel enjoys Miranda’s unobtrusive companionship and occasionally converses with her in German.
• She likes getting to the highest places she can find (mountains, tree tops, hills, the Order’s roof)
• She’s not the strongest of swimmers, and because her Innocence requires a lot of space to function properly, she gets uneasy when on boats. She’d prefer not to land in the water and have her uniform soak up water, because the heavier she is the more likely she is to dislodge her shoulder when maneuvering through the air.
• Regardless, she still manages to hurt her left shoulder a lot. OTL
• Lenalee was the main person to train her at the Order, since she was the only one able to keep up with Liesel in the air. Lenalee had to catch her several times during the first few training sessions. Once her stamina was built up better, Lenalee wasn’t as much of a necessity during training, but Liesel still enjoys sparring with her friend.
• It took Liesel nearly 7 months to properly learn how to coordinate the explosive capabilities of her innocence.
--Her namesake is actually taken from a fantastic book written by Markus Zusak, The Book Thief. Her last name is from another character who plays a vital role in for Liesel in the book, so I wanted to combine them. As a sort of appreciation for the two and because they were so close, with the other character acting as a sort of motherly figure at times.

I came looking for her after the DGM Talks and I just wanted to say that I really like Liesel! :D She'd fit into DGM really well, in my opinion.
